Irving Oil fights back
Irving Oil Ltd. (Saint John, New Brunswick) said it "will vigorouslydefend" a class-action lawsuit alleging that the chain overcharged consumerson fuel taxes in 2004. The suit was filed in February by Option Consommateurs,a Canadian nonprofit group. "We have received the legal papers and we are inthe process of reviewing them," Irving Oil spokesperson Jennifer Parker toldConvenience Store Decisions. "We believe the case is without merit andthat there was no loss suffered by consumers. It is our intention to vigorouslydefend against it." Irving Oil is one of Canada's biggest refiners and conveniencestore operators. Its 250,000-barrel-perday refinery in St. John is also thelargest crude processing plant in Canada. The company operates 350 Mainway andBluecanoe convenience stores in the U.S. and Canada. The suit only covers theoil company's Canadian operations.
