Valero Energy Corp. has donated $5 million to the University of Texas Health Science Center to create a distinguished transplant surgeon faculty chair and to support transplantation research, among other programs, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The donation is among the largest in the organization’s history. It will go towards the health science center’s Campaign for the Future of Health, which aims to raise $150 million in private donations and $150 million in public funding.

“Valero’s employees and stockholders recognize the important work the health science center is doing, and we’re glad to be able to help the people there in their efforts,” Valero Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Klesse told the newspaper.

In addition to transplantation programs, the money will go to support oral health programs for those with low incomes, a dual-degree program, and medical humanities and ethics education.

Bob Peugh is one person the donation will be helping. A director of marketing in Valero’s propane sales department, Peugh underwent a liver transplant. After which, he wrote a letter to Klesse

Also, a new transplantation biology fund created with the Valero gift will go to supporting laboratory equipment and scientific infrastructure for the transplant program. The money will also be used to help researchers figure out more about the biology of transplants to improve patient care.
