A plan to open the first drive-thru convenience store in St. John’s, New Foundland, has collapsed before it even made it to the checkout.
North Atlantic Petroleum Co. had planned to open the drive-thru, but residents opposed and circulated a petition to complain that the plan would lead to traffic congestion and pollution from idling vehicles, according to CBC News.
St. John’s city council had been poised to consider the application–and the petition–at a meeting this week. However, North Atlantic retail manager Glen Sullivan said the company heard the message from the petition, which attracted about 50 signatures.
“After hearing the comments from residents in the area, we decided that the concerns that they raised were worth the consideration,” Sullivan said. “We felt that a deferral or withdrawal of this application at this present time would be the wise thing to do.”
Sullivan said North Atlantic will consider installing a drive-thru at one of its other locations later this year.
