Carlisle, Pa.-based supermarket chain Giant Food Stores Inc. is planning to enter the convenience store world by opening two c-stores in the Lancaster, Pa., area, Pennlive.com reported.

The company’s supermarkets include all the standard supermarket fare, but it also sells fuel at some sites. The retailer told Pennlive.com, however, that its Lancaster County customers can’t take advantage of its gas rewards program because some stores in that area don’t have gas offerings.

So the chain is responding by opening a few convenience stores with fueling stations, stocking them with goods already being hawked in the grocery stores. The Lancaster-area customers can apply their accumulated bonus card points for gas discounts at the c-stores, Pennlive.com reported.

"These convenience stores are sort of a natural extension of Giant’s success selling gas," company spokeswoman Tracy Pawelski told Pennlive.com.

Pawelski told the online news outlet that the first of the two c-stores are scheduled to open early this year.
