Inc. magazine has revealed its fourth annual Inc. 5000 list, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.
“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. President Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.” Among those leaders and entrepreneurs are Kum & Go, Mansfield Oil, 7-Eleven and Atlas Oil Co.
Kum & Go
West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go ranked 4,582 on the 2010 Inc. 5000 list, showing a three-year growth of 16% from 2006-2009. On the list of top 100 companies by employee count it ranked 41. It ranked 55 on the list of top 100 companies by gross dollar growth, and took the No. 20 slot on Inc.’s list of the top 100 companies by revenue.
“Kum & Go is honored to be recognized by Inc. magazine as a result of our exceptional growth during the past three years,” said Catherine Huggins, director of communications for Kum & Go, which operates 430 c-stores in 12 states throughout the Midwest. She added that Kum & Go’s growth has been driven by three primary factors: its passionate associates; customer service; and its belief in being a responsible steward of the environment as demonstrated by its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) stores and other “green” activities.
7-Eleven
Dallas-based 7-Eleven, the industry’s largest c-store operator with 38,000 stores in 16 countries (approximately 6,000 in the U.S.) ranked 4,929 on the Inc. 5000 list with a three-year growth of 4%. Its 2009 revenue totaled $15.1 billion. It ranked seventh on the list of top 100 companies by employee count, No. 12 among the top 100 companies by gross dollar growth and second on the list of top 100 companies by revenue.
Atlas Oil Co.
Taylor, Mich.-based Atlas Oil Co. made the list for the second consecutive year, increasing its rank from 4,424 to 4,146 in 2009. Atlas Oil distributes petroleum products and related services in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Texas. The company saw a three-year growth of 29%, and its 2009 revenue totaled $1.1 billion. It ranked 51 on the list of top 100 companies by gross dollar growth, 30 among the top 100 companies by revenue, No. 83 in energy and No. 57 in Detroit.
“We’ve increased our position quite a bit from last year to this year, so we’re excited for both our company and our employees,” said Mike Evans, executive vice president for Atlas Oil.
Evans attributed the company’s strong position on the list of top 100 companies by revenue to the fact that the company has grown its footprint over the last couple of years. “We’ve been able to find new
revenue sources by looking into other states and growing with our customers,” he noted.
In addition to the Inc. 5000 honor, the company is also celebrating another important milestone this year—its 25th anniversary. “One of our core values is grow or go, so I feel like we’re doing the right thing as it relates to spreading out and growing the company,” Evans said.
Mansfield Oil
Gainesville, Ga.-based Mansfield Oil ranked 3,626 on the 2010 Inc. list, up from 3,800 the previous year. Mansfield Oil Co. manages and supplies fuel to corporations, retailers, convenience stores and government agencies in 49 states. The company saw a three-year growth of 45% and a 2009 revenue of $3 billion. It was fifth on the list of top 100 companies on the Inc. 5000 by gross dollar growth, seventh among the top 100 companies by revenue and No. 79 in energy.
