The Subway restaurant chain is growing at a fast pace. Subway’s franchisees, between Oct. 1 and Dec. 21, opened more than 500 new restaurants around the globe.
Milestones for the period include reaching more than 33,700 locations worldwide, of which 9,900 can be found in international markets. The 500 new Subway restaurants accounted for some 600,000 square feet of retail space and provided job and career opportunities to about 5,000 men and women.
Regional milestones reached during the fourth quarter of the year include the opening of the 500th location in Brazil, the 50th location in Malaysia and the 2,400th location in the state of California.
In the non-traditional development category, the Subway chain has more than 7,700 locations in places such as airports, department stores, hospitals and park and recreational facilities around the world. Some of the chain’s recent non-traditional openings include Subway restaurants at airports in Alberta, Malaysia and Singapore; the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad; hospitals and medical centers in the U.S.; a hotel in Mexico and a zoo in Taiwan.
Other highlights of the past few months included Subway Director of Development Don Fertman’s appearance on the hit CBS television program, Undercover Boss. Participation in the show allowed him to get a glimpse of a part of the business he rarely sees during his daily routine at Subway World Headquarters. Not only was he able to see firsthand what was happening on the front lines in the stores while he worked undercover at several Subway restaurants, he was also able to get to know a few of the dedicated and hard working individuals who make the Subway restaurant chain what it is.
“After working with these folks, I can see why we continually are rated very high by consumers,” said Fertman. “We are all proud of our wonderful Sandwich Artists, store managers and franchisees, who consistently demonstrate the entrepreneurial spirit that is the foundation of the Subway system.”
Currently, the Subway chain has nearly 4,000 convenience store, gas station, highway rest areas and other retail locations. The following is the breakdown of those Subway restaurants that opened between Oct. 1 and Dec. 21:
