“I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that come with being the primary legal advisor to a growing and dynamic company like Kum & Go,” says newly appointed vice president and general counsel.

Kum & Go’s president and CEO Kyle Krause has announced the addition of Franci Phelan as the senior vice president of human resources (Grow People) and the promotion of Charles Campbell to vice president and general counsel.

A native Iowan, Phelan joins Kum & Go after serving as the chief human resources officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Wash.  She has held previous human resources positions with The Principal Financial Group, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and DuPont/Pioneer.

“Franci has an extensive background in human resources.  As our top HR executive, she will provide a vital link between our talented associates and seasoned leadership team,” said Krause.  “I am confident that Franci will develop strategies to ensure Kum & Go remains an outstanding place to work and grow as a professional.”

Phelan holds a master of science in management from Indiana Wesleyan University and a bachelor of arts in business communication from Arizona State University. She is currently enrolled in George Washington University’s doctoral program in Human & Organizational Learning. In addition, she is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and a Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). Her community involvement has included Hospice of Central Iowa, Special Olympics, the Des Moines Public Library, I-JAG, and the Des Moines Higher Education Institution. She has also been involved with the United Way and continues to advise The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Council of Ag Education (NCAE) as needed.

Campbell, associate general counsel since 2004, was recently promoted to vice president and general counsel. Campbell has been a member of the Kum & Go legal team for over seven years and provides business-centered counsel to the company’s executives and associates.

“Charley has been an integral part of Kum & Go’s legal team for many years.  His knowledge of our business model and his leadership in the legal community make him an excellent fit as vice president and general counsel,” Krause said.

When asked about the primary focus of his new position, Campbell emphasized the importance of leadership as Kum & Go continues to grow.  “I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that come with being the primary legal advisor to a growing and dynamic company like Kum & Go.  I will continue to find new ways to facilitate the company’s plans for long-term growth while at the same time, managing our legal risk,” he said.

A native of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Campbell earned his doctor of jurisprudence from Drake University.  He also received a bachelor of science degree in Finance from Iowa State University.

Kum & Go operates more than 430 convenience stores in 11 states (Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming).
