7-Eleven joins Walgreens, CVS on Retail Top 20 list, showing convenience is a key trend.
7-Eleven took the No. 17 spot on BrandZ’s Retail Top 20 list, part of its 100 Most Valuable Global Brands report.
The appearance of 7-Eleven in the BrandZ Retail Top 20 for the first time confirms the strength of the convenience trend. The convenience store chain operates 55,000 locations worldwide, including a strong presence in Asia. 7-Eleven’s brand value for 2015 was listed as $7,492 million.
On the Retail Top 20, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba (No. 1) and Amazon (No. 2) have no physical stores but surpassed Walmart (No. 3), which operates over 10,000 stores worldwide. This demonstrates the clear impact of e-commerce on the radical transformation and rationalization of retail, the BrandZ report pointed out.
The impact is also evident in the changing of top brands over the history of the list. Almost half of the BrandZ Retail Top 20 brands have changed since the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands report launched 10 years ago.
When the list first launched, consumers were looking for a trade-off between price, selection and convenience. Today, however, they expect it all—not only the broad range and inexpensive price tags of big-box stores, but more personalized products and service, including greater emphasis on convenience.
Costco (9), CVS (11), Walgreens (13) and Target (14) were among the retailers on the Retail Top 20 list. Apple took the No. 1 spot for all categories on the top 100 list, followed by Google. Also included on the Top 100 list were ExxonMobil (49), Shell (54) and BP (81).
