Customer innovation is leaving the traditional salad and sandwich behind and the replacements are to die for.
There comes a time when the traditional Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich or a plain old salad are just too boring, and to many consumers, that time is now. People everywhere are experimenting and finding new ways to spice things up a bit. New sandwich and salad trends are sprouting up all over the place, and some of them are just too good to miss.
According to a report by The Food Channel, there are 10 prominent sandwich/ salad trends that have got consumers’ mouths watering. The trends are as follows:
1. New Enhancements: This trend is all about toppings. From condiments to dried fruits, anything is fair game for these food innovators. Instead of simple ketchup consumers are adding spices and mixing condiments like mayonnaise and ketchup together. For some it is all about a change in texture and adding some crunchy nuts or dried fruits is just the right touch.
2. Vegetable Infusions: For so long, lettuce has been the go-to vegetable for salad and sandwiches, but not anymore. Roasted broccoli or asparagus is the perfect flavor and texture addition to any boring sandwich or salad. For those who find the roasted veggies still too bland, the answer is spices. Add Thyme, curry, Hirissa and Siracha sauce to spice things up a bit and get that extra kick.
3. Global Flavors: Forget tacos and sushi, the global sandwiches are on the rise. Whether it’s Doner Kebabs from Germany and Turkey or Cemita from Mexico, those global flavors with an American twist are all the rage. People are also loving that global salad trend, especially the Tabouleh salad which features bulgur, chopped parsley, mint, tomatoes and onion.
4. Cheese Choices: From hard deli to soft and semisoft cheese consumers can’t get enough. To achieve a new texture and a new experience, people are adding Feta to salad, Brie to a sandwich, and even adding in some yogurt bites, pistachios and seeds.
5. Daypart Agnostic: Who says a salad isn’t breakfast food? Consumers are now claiming that it is, and breakfast sandwiches are not exclusively for before 11 a.m. anymore. Keeping up with these consumer desires, McDonald’s is experimenting with an all-day breakfast menu, as are many other restaurants.
6. Seafood as the Protein of Choice: The days of simple sliced deli meat on sandwiches are gone. Adding a soft crab, some lobster or whitefish to a sandwich can give just the right texture, and flaking some “trash fish,” like Tilapia, into a salad can provide a unique and exciting flavor.
7. Grain Salads: Whether it’s mixing grains into a salad or making a salad from quinoa, which is made from the seeds of a grain closely related to spinach, grain salads are coming up fast behind lettuce. Grains that are particularly popular when it comes to concocting a salad are ancient grains such as freekeh, spelt, chia and farro.
8. Sandwich Breads: Plain white bread is becoming more of a novelty as pretzel, brioche, Hawaiian rolls and homemade breads are becoming more mainstream. These breads offer a change in taste and texture to the traditional sandwich. Gluten free consumers have a newfound preference to banana flour for bread making. Flaky biscuits, alcohol bread and lettuce pockets are among other substitutions for traditional white bread.
9. Beyond French Dip: Stemming from the “dressing on the side” trend for salads, dipping has become the norm. This love of dipping may call for the introduction of sandwich and salad dippers in the near future. Some favorites for sandwich dipping include melted cheese, jams, apple butter or applesauce.
10. Wilted Salads: Different from lettuce that spent too long on the vine, these wilted leaves were perfectly ripe when they were placed in a hot skillet. Charring these leaves brings out a new texture and flavor that has mouths watering. Charring endive and filling it with cheese, along with flash fried kale and spinach are quite delicious twists on the traditional salad. The charring doesn’t stop with the lettuce, though. Toasting sandwiches is quite popular, and now having a little black showing on the edges shouldn’t mean an angry customer.
