Sheetz may no longer sell West Virginia made pepperoni rolls, and customers do not approve.
When Sheetz first announced that it was seeking a new supplier for its pepperoni rolls, customers made their disapproval clear. Pepperoni rolls are believed to have originated in West Virginia, and customers are demanding that the rolls continue to be locally made. And it sounds as if Sheetz is reconsidering.
According to a report by WSAZ, Sheetz recently notified a local Harrison County, W.Va. bakery that the stores will no longer carry the bakery’s pepperoni rolls. The bakery in question, Rogers and Mazza’s Bakery, currently supplies pepperoni rolls to more than 100 Sheetz locations in four states, but they have been notified that they have until Aug. 3 to pull their rolls from the stores.
The decision to cut ties with the bakery stems from plans to expand pepperoni roll distribution to over 500 stores. Sheetz has been searching for a bakery that is capable of consistently providing high quality pepperoni rolls to a growing number of locations. The search included looking at both current and new suppliers.
When customers learned of the possibility that Sheetz may choose an out-of-state supplier, they made their opinions known by using social media to demand that the pepperoni rolls stay locally made. The passionate responses from customers caused the family-owned company to reconsider.
The company is still looking to choose one supplier for its stores, but has also stated that a West Virginia based supplier will provide pepperoni rolls for all West Virginia stores.
