Angry Orchard has introduced Orchard’s Edge, a new cider project that features ciders inspired by unexpected ingredients and aging processes. The first two new ciders in the Orchard’s Edge series are Knotty Pear and The Old Fashioned. Both will be available year-round beginning in February. The ciders are both aged on American oak and feature non-apple fruit like pears and oranges, along with exotic spices like cardamom, all meant to work with and enhance cider’s main ingredient: the apple. With a brilliant golden hue and bright appearance, featuring 6.5% ABV, Knotty Pear leads with ripe apple, baked pear aromas and hints of cardamom. While the cider’s main ingredient is apple juice from U.S. apple varieties like Gala and Fuji, the addition of pear juice adds a new dimension to the cider, creating a pleasantly dry, subtly spicy flavor. This style has subtle notes of citrus and mint and showcases fresh acidity, lasting tannin and a pleasantly dry finish from aging on oak. The Old Fashioned also has 6.5% ABV, and is deep golden in color and has a bright apple flavor and slight vanilla from American oak. This cider is a blend of American apples aged on oak with dried tart cherries, California grown navel orange peel and charred bourbon barrel staves, offering citrus and cherry aromas with an oaky flavor. The cider has lasting tannins and a full, round mouthfeel. Orchard’s Edge will be sold in six-packs for a suggested retail price of $11.99, and both varieties will also be available on rotating draft in select bars and restaurants beginning spring 2016.
