Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan and Humane Society of Kent County among charities aided by SAS donations in 2015.
Abraham & Sons (SAS), a convenience store distributor in Grand Rapids, Mich., has been giving back to the communities it serves this season, including donating and distributing water to its neighbors in Flint, Mich.
It all began in December when SAS provided the Santa Claus Girls, a non-profit that has been providing Christmas gifts for children in the community for more than 100 years, with over 12,000 candy treats. SAS has been partnering with the Santa Claus Girls for 50 years, adding Christmas joy to thousands of children.
For the past three years, SAS office employees have selected two charities at the beginning of the year that they wish to sponsor. Money is collected through the “Jeans for Charity” program, which allows employees to wear blue jeans on Fridays throughout the year. The chosen charities for 2015 were Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan and the Humane Society of Kent County.
Each organization received a check in the amount of $1,677.15 from the efforts of its employees.
Finally, in support of its neighbors in Flint and its customers in the greater Flint area, the employees in the Walker Distribution center donated seven pallets of water, including liters for drinking and gallons for cooking and bathing. This project was spearheaded by Jeff Berry, night shift supervisor. Berry came up with the idea and solicited the help of drivers and distribution center employees to purchase water to help the residents of Flint from this devastating water crisis. The water was delivered to the Flint Michigan Food Bank by SAS driver, Ron Wise.
