Sixteen more Walmart Canada stores will soon stop accepting Visa cards.
Walmart Canada is continuing its fight against Visa’s high swipe fees by announcing that it will soon be increasing the number of Canadian locations that will no longer accept Visa Inc. cards.
After ceasing to accept Visa cards in three Thunder Bay, Ontario stores in July, Walmart has decided to move forward and expand the refusal of Visa cards in 16 Manitoba area stores. According to Reuters, the Manitoba stores will stop accepting Visa cards for payment on Oct. 24, 2016. The stores in the Manitoba area are the stores that are most ready to make this change, according to a Walmart spokesperson.
Walmart Canada operates over 400 stores in the country, and the company plans to eventually stop accepting Visa cards across the country. According to Reuters, the company has also stated that the change will not affect stores outside of Canada.
Reuters reported that Walmart is continuing negotiations with Visa in an attempt to reach an agreement on a lower, more acceptable fee for the retailer. However, until an agreement is reached, the company may continue to cease accepting Visa cards in more stores throughout the country.
