Dawa convenience store owner owner claims the name means ‘welcome’ in Korean.
Wawa has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against a convenience store named “Dawa” in Paterson, N.J., claiming that the store is looking to take advantage of its reputation by using a similar name, according to a report by ABC News.
Wawa operates convenience stores in six states, including New Jersey.
Dawa Owner Mike Han told the Courier-Post that he chose the name Dawa to convey that everyone is welcome. Dawa means “come in” in Korean and is interpreted to mean “welcome.”
Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce told ABC News that Wawa has a responsibility to protect its brand and its consumers from any confusion.
Wawa’s name is derived from a Native American word for Canada goose.
