Merchant bank fees are expected to hit first and could be passed along to c-stores.
Visa Inc., Mastercard Inc. and Discover plan to increase a range of fees that merchants pay to process credit and debit transactions, including interchange fees, beginning in April, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Reuters reported that the fees financial institutions like banks pay for processing card payments for merchants will also rise.
A Visa spokesperson told Reuters that the fee increases hitting in April are for merchant banks—not merchants. But merchant banks could pass the fees along to merchant customers.
