Kroger Co., the Cincinnati-based operator of 791 convenience stores, 1,100 supermarket fueling stations and 2,435 grocery stores, has hired Suzanne Lindsay as director of sustainability, a new position leading the grocer’s sustainability initiatives.

Lindsay, who previously created and led the sustainability efforts at PetSmart Inc., will lead Kroger’s Sustainability Leadership Team.

“We have made substantial progress in sustainability in the past five years through energy savings, waste reduction, transportation efficiency and by reducing the use of plastic bags,” said Lynn Marmer, group vice president of Corporate Affairs at Kroger. “Suzanne will help us accelerate our progress and identify new opportunities to improve our environmental stewardship. We are pleased that she is joining the Kroger family.”
