If successful, the smaller stores will be introduced in four other locations.

Aldi is targeting urban consumers with a new name for its smaller store concept in London: “Aldi Local.”

Aldi said the “Aldi Local” name aims to “help shoppers distinguish between smaller city stores in London and the conventional-sized Aldis.”

The store measures 6,400-square-feet, around half the size of a typical Aldi store. It has no parking lot and stocks 300 fewer products than the 1,800 found in an average Aldi, according to Retail Wire.

If successful, the name and concept will be introduced to four other locations that have opened in London over the past several years, according to Retail Wire.

Some see the test as an entry into the c-store channel to compete with stores like Amazon Go. But Aldi refuted these claims and said that the primary difference is that Aldi Local doesn’t sell larger products that shoppers in an urban areas wouldn’t be able to carry.
