Founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, 7-Eleven was the world’s first convenience store and has since become synonymous with convenience around the world with more than 81,000 stores in 18 countries—more than any other retailer. In the U.S. and Canada, 7-Eleven currently operates, franchises and/or licenses more than 13,000 stores, around 12,400 in the U.S. and 600 in Canada. The acquisitions of Sunoco and Speedway added over 5,000 new stores across the U.S., giving the company a presence in 47 of the top 50 most populated metro areas in the country. The company also operates under a family of banners and brands in the U.S. including 3,900 Speedway stores, 1,030 Sunoco stores,Speedway stores, Stripes, APlus, Loredo Taco Company and Raise the Roost Chicken and Biscuits. In the 1950s, 7-Eleven began its expansion beyond its home state of Texas into Florida, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. In 1963, it was the first retailer to remain open for 24 hours seven days a week. In 1965, it revolutionized the beverage category when it introduced the world’s first coffee to go and again in 1970 when it debuted the first self-serve soda fountain. 7-Eleven was acquired in 2005 by SEJ Asset Management & Investment Company, which is owned by Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd.
