Controversial tax on soda in Cook County, Ill., could end up on the chopping block.
Cook County, Ill.’s tax on sugary drinks, which impacts Chicago and surrounding areas, could disappear by Dec. 1.
The Chicago Tribune reported that 12 out of 17 commissioners have signed on to repeal the sugary drink tax ordinance—enough to override a veto by the board president. The ordinance is set for a vote on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
The ordinance calls for a penny-an-ounce tax on sugar- and artificially sweetened beverages. The tax went into effect on Aug. 2, and has faced public backlash fueled by a repeal campaign funded by the American Beverage Association.
