Energy drinks containing certain levels of caffeine would be banned completely.
Citing the “dangerous” health effects energy drinks have on children and young adults, an ordinance proposed by the Cleveland City Council this week aims to ban minors from buying energy drinks within the city, WKYC Online reported.
The emergency ordinance would make it illegal to sell energy drinks to anyone under 18 years of age, and would also remove the beverages from certain vending machines. The proposed ban would also prohibit the sale of any energy drink that contains caffeine exceeding or equal to 140 milligrams per four-fluid-ounce (or larger) container, or 80 milligrams per 0.8 fluid ounce to three-fluid-ounce container, according to WKYC Online.
Some vending machines, such as those inside factories or businesses that are not accessible to the general public would be exempt from the ordinance.
The measure not yet been voted on by the city council.
