After 38 years at the New Jersey-based chain, the retail veteran looks forward to the next chapter in his career.

Following nearly four decades of service at QuickChek, John Schaninger has departed the New Jersey-based convenience store chain, Convenience Store Decisions has learned.

Schaninger joined QuickChek in 1978 as an assistant manager, growing through the operation’s ranks from assistant manager to district leader, and eventually to region 1 vice president of operations. He was named vice president of sales and marketing in 2004, the position he held at the time of his departure.

Prior to joining Quick Chek, Schaninger worked in his family’s grocery business, and it was there that he developed his love for people and products. He is married to Shelli Sonstein and has one son, Michael, now a member of the Pepsico team.

“First and foremost, I will miss all of my friends, coworkers and team at QuickChek. I owe them tremendous gratitude for my success through the years,” Schaninger told CSD. “The time is right to draw on my strengths and passions, and pursue further opportunities to make a difference in our great industry.”

Schaninger has also served as a board member for the National Advisory Group (NAG) since 2016, where he has been instrumental in providing leadership and lending his extensive industry experience in helping to identify Burning Issues for upcoming NAG Conferences, selecting speakers and serving as a NAG ambassador for new and existing NAG members.

The QuickChek story began in 1888 when Durling Farms was founded to serve the central New Jersey region. Over the following 75 years, the Durling Farms brand grew to become synonymous with quality milk and dairy products delivered fresh to the customer’s door.

Guided by the principles of Total Customer Dedication, QuickChek continues to define the term “fresh convenience.” The chain remains the market leader by providing one-stop shopping, offering value and a wide variety of grocery and market items to meet your needs.

Privately-held, QuickChek operates 145 stores with more than 3,500 team members throughout New Jersey and New York. The retailer was named Convenience Store Decisions’ 2016 Convenience Store Chain of the Year.
