The company is working with CBD product manufacturers to sell topical “creams, sprays, roll-ons, lotions and salves.”
CVS stores in 8 states will begin selling cannabidiol (CBD) products.
CBD will be sold in topical products including “creams, sprays, roll-ons, lotions and salves,” CVS Health spokesman Mike DeAngelis told USA TODAY.
“We are not selling any CBD-containing supplements or food additives,” DeAngelis said.
The products will be available in 800 CVS locations in Alabama, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and Tennessee, NBC News reports.
“Anecdotally, we’ve heard from our customers that have used those products that, gee, it’s helped with pain relief for arthritis and other ailments,” CVS Health CEO Larry Merlo told CNBC. “We’re going to walk slowly, but we think this is something customers are going to be looking for as part of the health offering.”
CBD comes from the hemp plant, a relative to marijuana. Both plants contain many types of cannabinoids, but marijuana is high in the psychoactive chemical THC.
CBD is the non-psychoactive component of cannabis and is used as a treatment for a variety of mental and physical health conditions.
