David Johnson, vice president of operations at Amarillo, Texas-based Toot’n Totum Food Stores, Monday night was named the first recipient of the Lifetime Award for Convenience Retailing Monday night at the 2015 NAG Conference. Johnson, who has been a NAG member for nearly two decades, served as the NAG board chairman from 2009-2012.

He attended his first National Advisory Group conference in the early 1990s. Johnson said that he remembered that just five years ago, NAG was a modest organization of convenience store members. Since then it has grown every year to become the robust retailer group it is today. Today’s present NAG leaders will ensure the organization’s future success, he said.

“This is what NAG is all about,” Johnson said. “It’s what we’ve invested ourselves in, to make sure that this organization perpetuates itself.”

Johnson stepped forward in 2009 to serve a three-year term as the NAG Board Chairman and during that time he helped recruit new members, provided much-needed industry outreach to prospective members and helped cement NAG’s legacy as the premier networking event for small, mid-sized and family-owned convenience store chains.

John Lofstock, editor-in-chief of Convenience Store Decisions and executive director of NAG, said during the presentation that Johnson carried the NAG torch in 2008 when there weren’t a great number of willing members to pass it to. During his involvement with the group, Johnson has proven a great ambassador for the NAG brand, Lofstock said.

“David’s role in resurrecting NAG and providing leadership when it was needed most cannot be understated,” Lofstock said.

NAG is focused on small, mid-sized and family-owned businesses, and has a long history dedicated to helping convenience store owners improve their businesses through education and networking.
