Deyton steps down and Zeller takes the helm.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Dr. Lawrence Deyton is stepping down as director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, the National Association for Tobacco Outlest (NATO) reported.

Deyton is assuming new duties at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Mitchell Zeller will assume the role of director of the Center for Tobacco Products beginning March 4, 2013.

The announcement came in an e-mail message from Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to NATO. According to the email, Zeller has more than 30 years of FDA-related experience, including six years as a public interest attorney working on food issues, five years as a congressional counsel working on food and drug issues, and seven years as a senior FDA official.  While working at the FDA, Zeller oversaw the agency’s original jurisdiction of tobacco products in the 1990’s and was the director of the FDA’s office of Tobacco Programs.
