A proposed bill that aimed to increase security requirements at convenience stores in Florida, was quashed with a veto after passing in the Florida House and Senate.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has vetoed the Convenience Business Security Bill that would have required Florida convenience stores to uphold certain security measures in an effort to make stores safer for employees and customers, WFSU News reported.

The Florida Petroleum Marketing and Convenience Store Association was in favor of the Convenience Business Security Bill, which had passed unanimously in both the Florida House and Senate.

The bill would have required convenience stores to install security devices, including silent alarms. Stores that have been a past target for specific felonies would be required to take extra security measures, such as hiring an armed guard between 11p.m. and 5p.m.

In his veto letter, Scott said the bill would result in increased costs to the businesses, and due to the costly nature of the requirements the bill proposed, could adversely affect job growth in Florida.
