Peeps-brand Marshmallow candy is serving as more than just a tasty treat this month, as Washington, D.C.-based artist David Ottogalli has used the candy to create a giant sculpture, “Real Peeps Vote!”
The sculpture uses more than 3,000 Peeps chicks, bunnies, hearts, stars, cats, ghosts, cut-outs, snowmen, trees, the new Peeps chocolate mousse-flavored bears and bunnies and Peeps Teenee Beanee Jelly Beans.
Peeps-maker Just Born Inc. said Ottogalli’s sculpture blends patriotism and humor for the voting season. It features a horde of Peeps standing in line to vote. Photos of the sculpture can be seen at www.peepshow.com.
“Real Peeps Vote is a tribute to the election process and America,” said Chris Schneeweiss, brand manager for Peeps at Just Born Inc. “We commissioned this project to encourage voting and show that Peeps have a sense of humor. As we have sent all our Peeps to the polls, we hope that all Peep-le will get out and vote as well.”
Ottogalli’s project took eight weeks to complete, with the finished piece being 9 feet wide by 5 feet high, spanning about 4 feet in diameter.
Just Born Inc. is a privately owned company founded in 1923 and headquartered in Bethlehem, Pa. In addition to the Peeps brand, the company makes such well-known brands as Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales and Teenee Beanee jellybeans.
