Encourages kids to read through its participation in Battle of the Books program.

Carroll County Public Library (CCPL) received 1,500 Subway Read a Book certificates and 1,500 coupon sheets, featuring eight Subway coupons, from Jiffy Mart of Westminster, Md.

Read a Book certificates award readers a Subway Fresh Fit Kids meal. These items will be given to participants of Carroll County Public Library’s Battle of the Books program and have a retail value of over $6,000. The donation of items, such as this generous donation from Jiffy Mart, helps encourage kids to participate in the program.

The purpose of the Battle of the Books program, held in partnership with Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS), is to encourage reading by students in grades 4-8, while highlighting Maryland’s Black-Eyed Susan award books, which are selected by school media specialists to introduce students to quality literature representing a variety of viewpoints. The game format creates interest and excitement for reading, school spirit, and teamwork. Through the fun and excitement of competition, students improve reading skills and develop a love of lifelong learning.

CCPL anticipates that 1,500 CCPS students, from all over Carroll County, will participate in this year’s Battle of the Books program, and over 4,000 parents, family members, and friends will attend the nine battle events from March through May.
