Austin, Minn. is getting its second Kwik Trip convenience store this week as the La Crosse, Wis. chain completes renovations to rebrand the former Severson Conoco gas station. The Austin stories one of about 20 new Kwik Trips opened this year in Minnesota and Iowa, the most growth the company
has done in one year, said Hans Zietlow, director of real estate for Kwik Trip, which closed on purchasing the site the same day.
Replacement signs and other interior conversions will be done before it is reopened as a 24-hour operation, Zietlow told The (Minn.) Post-Bulletin. The store will be a lot smaller than other Kwik Trips, Zietlow said, because the chain traditionally builds stores bigger than standard convenience stores.
Kwik Trip will continue running the site’s car wash and lease the adjacent space to the Subway restaurant. Earlier this year, Kwik Trip also bought the former BP gas station across the street from the Severson site.
Plans are to demolish the BP building and its car wash and remove the gas tank infrastructure if that already hasn’t been done, Zietlow said. After turning it into a vacant lot, Kwik Trip plans to sell it.
