Marathon's $44,000 contribution aided in the resurfacing of two basketball courts in Bay Point, Calif.

Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) recently donated $44,000 to revamp the Ambrose Recreation and Park District, which included significant upgrades to two basketball courts located near Martinez Renewables.

“These courts were 22 years old and in bad shape,” said Eduardo Torres, director on the board of Ambrose Recreation and Park District. “We are thrilled to be able to upgrade the courts for our children and the community.”

The upgrades are expected to draw more children to the area and bring the community together. The Ambrose Recreation Center runs an after-school program that will also benefit from the upgraded facilities.

“I used to live in Bay Point, so it makes me happy to see improvements that benefit the community. This park is a place the youth can be proud of and enjoy for decades to come,” said Marathon Petroleum Community Relations Representative Nichol Carranza. “We make an effort to understand what our communities need to thrive, and this was one way we could help bring people together.”

Contra Costa County Supervisor Shanelle Scales-Preston attended the ribbon-cutting event, along with students in the afterschool program.
