Marathon to reduce emissions and pay civil penalties.
Marathon Petroleum Corp. has agreed to pay nearly $6 million dollars and cut emissions at facilities in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, as part of a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice, Cleveland.com reported.
The EPA and the Justice Department claimed that Marathon Petroleum Corp. failed to comply with federal fuel emissions standards, record keeping, sampling and testing required under the Clean Air Act.
As part of the settlement, Marathon is set to pay $2.8 million to reduce emissions from 14 fuel storage tanks at distribution sites in the three states, as well as an additional $2.9 million civil penalties. It also must forfeit 5.5 billion sulfur credits, according to Cleveland.com.
