Of the c-store retailers that have undergone major transformations over the past few years, Salt Lake City-based Maverik stands apart, coming in large part due to its massive 2023 acquisition of Kum & Go which grew its network to more than 800 stores in 20 states.
The acquisition sent waves throughout the c-store industry, and also led to the eventual departure of the Kum & Go brand — a rebranding initiative that the chain is making serious progress on.
But as the chain increasingly focuses on its brand, it is simultaneously optimizing its portfolio.
Recently, Maverik sold three sites in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Mega Saver. This is not the first time the two retailers have teamed up, however, as since June, Mega Saver has purchased more than 20 Kum & Go locations in two states, according to local publication Argus Leader.
In late August, MarketWatch reported that Mega Saver plans to expand its footprint to 70 c-stores across Nebraska, Iowa, Florida and now South Dakota.
“We’re happy to announce that a few former Kum and Go’s have officially joined the Mega Saver family,” the retailer wrote on Facebook. “Each location will have the same amazing employees as before, and we are thrilled to have them on our team! As we continue to grow, our mission stays the same — supporting the community with low prices and convenient shopping.”
Meanwhile, Maverik just added its first South Dakota Kum & Go store to its schedule for rebranding. According to its website, the store, located in Elk Point, is expected to reopen on Nov. 19.
The chain has already rebranded dozens of stores throughout Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska, and has completed rebranding efforts in Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. Its first rebranded site opened in Draper, Utah, in January 2024 — just months after it completed the acquisition.
Inside the stores, customers can expect to find Kum & Go products replaced with Maverik offerings like burritos, pizza and the chain’s signature BonFire foodservice lineup.
On the digital front, Maverik is integrating these rebranded stores to its network through its newly-launched mobile app, which was rolled out in March.
The app features a redesigned user interface, an upgraded location map, performance enhancements and a Nitro Mobile Pay feature which allows customers to “scan and pay” from the app.
Looking ahead, Maverik plans to reopen dozens of former Kum & Go locations, with its focus currently on Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska.
