Mountain Empire Oil Co. (MEOC), based in Johnson City, Tenn., said it reached an agreement to buy 16 Sunoco sites in East Tennessee.
The deal would increase MEOC’s store count to approximately 70.
“These sites are a great addition to our current network of locations,” said John Kelly, MEOC’s vice president of operations. “I’m also pleased to announce that we will become a Sunoco distributor beginning operations of these sites the week of May 4th.”
The sale includes stations in eight Tennessee markets.
Mountain Empire Oil Company operates about 50 convenience stores under the Roadrunner Markets banner. The stores are located throughout the Southeast, but most can be found in northeast Tennessee.
In addition to traditional convenience store fare, Roadrunner Markets also sell BP and Shell gasoline, as well as diesel, racing gas, and kerosene.
Stores distinguish themselves in the market by accepting payments for utility and phone bills.
The first Mountain Empire Oil convenience store opened in 1980 in Greenville, Tenn., which lies in the foothills of the Appalachians.
