The 2014 National Advisory Group (NAG) kicked off Sunday, Sept. 7 in San Antonio at the Westin Riverwalk hotel.

The National Advisory Group (NAG) is an association of small to mid-size and family-owned chains and the executives that run them. This group convenes at an annual conference in September to exchange ideas with the motivation to improve their business performance and ultimately their bottom line. The setting of the conference encourages an extremely educational, yet highly social environment.

The event began with a welcome reception followed by a dinner with a surprise keynote speaker. Lt. Col. Steve Russell, author of the book, We Got Him!: A Memoir of the Hunt and Capture of Saddam Hussein, told his tale of the search and capture of Saddam Hussein.

Lt. Col. Russell spoke of the daily successes, dead ends and raids he and his men of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division experienced as they stayed hot on Saddam’s trail, and recounted the glorifying moment of his capture.

The NAG conference runs through Tuesday, Sept. 9. Over the next two days, retailers will learn about burning issues in the industry, listen to panels and top notch speakers, and participate in retailer information exchanges with non-competing chains, as well network with industry peers in similar size operations.

Burning issue sessions include:

• How to remove costs and boost profits in your distribution system

• How to execute a winning deli and roller grill program

• Trends, analysis and insider expectations from the packaged beverage category

• The state of tobacco and electronic cigarettes

• Taking your coffee program from good to great

• Operations boot camp: ideas and key takeaways to boost store profitability

Stay tuned to CSD for more on the NAG conference and these hot topic issues. For more information on NAG, visit www.nagconvenience.com.
