New c-store plans to feature prepared foods and operate 24 hours per day.

After an almost year-long battle, Valentine Stores has won approval via a 4-1 vote by the Village Board of Trustees to build a Nice N Easy c-store on a former Main Street Mobil lot in Canton, N.Y., the Daily Courier-Observer.

At 5,500 square feet, the convenience store will be at least 1,000 square feet larger than a typical Nice N Easy, and construction could begin in June if all goes smoothly with the Village Planning Board and should take about eight weeks to complete, noted Valentine Stores President Edward Valentine. The new store is expected to feature a produce section, a prepared-food section, cheese, its own food concession of wraps, panini, subs and pizza, and seating for about 20. It does not plan to sell fresh-cut meat, but it expects to operate 24 hours per day and employ 20 to 30 people.

Gaining approval for the new store meant that the village board had to agree to rezone the downtown area to allow convenience stores with gas pumps, which was the reason for the long approval process.

Valentine Stores already has drawn up plans, which will be altered to meet special rules established as part of the rezoning to improve lighting and safety standards, Daily Courier-Observer noted.  As part of the approval, Valentine Stores also is required to conduct a study to determine the effect of the store on traffic.
