quickchekGives back to Sayreville, N.J. Fire Department by donating a portion of sales from a store that reopened following a strip mall fire.

QuickChek Corp. will donate 25 cents for every sub, sandwich and wrap sold in its Main Street store to the Sayreville Fire Department following the fire-damaged convenience market’s re-opening Tuesday, April 14.

Long known for its commitment to giving back to the communities it serves, the fresh convenience chain is running the donation from April 14 to May 13 in its store located at 881 Main Street in recognition of the fire department’s response in containing an early morning fire that broke out in the strip mall on Feb. 26. No one was injured in the blaze, which firefighters had under control approximately 90 minutes after it was believed to begin in a nearby restaurant around 5:30 a.m.

Two businesses in the strip mall were reportedly destroyed by the fire and others sustained water and smoke damage. QuickChek team members were safely evacuated from the store and have been working in other QuickChek locations in the area.

The QuickChek store suffered smoke damage and its utility room housing the electric and phone service was destroyed by the fire. The Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based chain had to develop a plan to bring in its own separate utility services to restore power and phones, and did so in coordination with the local power company and the borough. All product was removed from the store, which was cleaned by a restoration company, and all HVAC duct work was replaced.

“We are thankful to the Sayreville Fire Department for its timely response in getting the fire under control so quickly,” said QuickChek CEO Dean Durling. “We are fortunate that all of our team members were safe and that we are able to re-open this store and continue to serve the local neighborhood.”

Durling noted this fundraiser for the Sayreville Fire Department is similar to the ones it holds with each new store opening in which QuickChek donates money during a store’s first 30 days to one of the many local charity organizations that helps keep that community going.

Family-owned QuickChek has 140 stores throughout New Jersey, New York’s Hudson Valley and Long Island. The company has raised millions of dollars over the past few years for a variety of causes that benefit children, families, and military veterans. These include community food banks throughout the metropolitan area and Hope for the Warriors, which aids post-9/11 service members and their families.

The company is also title sponsor of the annual QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, which raises more than $100,000 each year to benefit local volunteer fire departments, ambulance corps, school groups, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and the Children’s Miracle Network of specialized children’s hospitals.
