QuikTrip Corp. has halted plans for a bakery in the St. Louis suburb of Bellefontaine Neighbors, Mo., choosing instead to focus efforts on a nearly completed bakery in Belton.
The Tulsa, Okla.-based convenience store chain pulled the plug on the $21 million project because of site problems.
The 479-store chain is almost finished building a new bakery in Belton, Mo., where it also has a distribution center. Company spokesman Mike Thornburgh told the Kansas City Business Journal that the Belton site provides easy access to surrounding markets such as Wichita, Kan., Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Neb.
“Kansas City is extremely important to us,” Thornburgh told the newspaper. “We have a great relationship with the various communities there.”
The new “QuikTrip Kitchens” in Belton is the second phase of a set of projects allowing the chain to provide its own brand of baked goods and fresh foods. The new bakery follows the opening of a test kitchen in Tulsa, Okla. two years ago.
