Ready Pac Foods makes a large recall on sliced apples sold in c-stores, supermarkets and fast food chains.
Ready Pac Foods Inc. recalled apple slices and pieces sold at fast food chains such as McDonald’s or Burger King, supermarkets and convenience stores because of possible listeria contamination.
Ready Pac Foods reported it is recalling 293,488 cases and 296,224 individually distributed units of fruit, vegetable and sandwich products containing the apples. The products are sold in 36 states and D.C.
The apples are used at McDonald’s for its apple packs, fruit & maple oatmeal and fruit & walnut snack trays. Burger King Worldwide Inc. sold the fruit in sliced apple packs. The apples were also used in fruit mixes and packages at Hannaford Supermarkets based in Scarborough, Maine; Wegmans, based in Rochester, N.Y.; and Wawa, based in Wawa, Pa. The products have dates ranging from July 8 through Aug. 20.
Consumers who eat foods contaminated with bacterium listeria monocytogenes can get a serious infection called listeriosis, which affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weak immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, confusion and convulsions.
The listeria monocytogenes were found on the equipment used by one of Ready Pac’s subsidiaries, Missa Bay, based in Swedesboro, N.J. Ready Pac reported no illnesses have yet been recorded.
