Republic logoA trend over the last year has been the continued decline in cigarette consumption and the growth in OTP. The consumers’ mindset has been that of trying new products and experimenting which has led to the use and growth of pipe tobacco consumption, cigarette rolling papers, cigarette filter tubes, and cigarette making machines. For those convenience stores that have a broader view of OTP, that which includes RYO / MYO, there’s a significant difference in sales and it’s quite a bit more. Studies conducted by Republic Tobacco and their wholesale customers show retailers embracing the category have increased their OTP profits 9% – 11%. Internal Republic Tobacco studies have shown sales reaching $300 per month per store. IRI reported for 52 weeks ending December 29, 2013 Pipe tobacco was the second category in growth posting 15.3% unit sales and 7.6% dollar sales.
