The retailer aims to add roughly 60 more in the state in the coming years.

Sheetz is making progress on its efforts to expand in key states with the announcement that it has broken ground on its second location in Michigan. Situated in Chesterfield Township, the 6,100-square-foot site is projected to open in late summer of early fall 2025, according to The Detroit News.

Sheetz first entered Michigan in August 2024 with a store in Romulus. The retailer also has definitive plans to add at least four more locations in Metro Detroit, Mich., with the goal to ultimately introduce 60 in the Great Lake State.

Since the announcement of its Michigan expansion, Sheetz has been active at city council meetings, scouting out and seeking approval for additional sites. However, the chain has been met by pushback in some cases, most notably in the Metro Detroit area.

Livonia, Mich., residents raised concerns about the number of c-stores in the area, potential crime and environmental effects. Additionally, in Farmington Hills, city council voted against rezoning a site that would’ve allowed the retailer to open a 12-pump c-store.

The Chesterfield Township site, however, was approved around this time last year. Sheetz told The Detroit News that it will be removing the canopy of an existing building at the site as early as this afternoon, March 11.

Positioned For Success
The Michigan move comes as no surprise to those familiar with the Sheetz brand. In October 2024, the operator announced the groundbreaking of a new 500,000-square-foot distribution facility in Findlay, Ohio. Designed specifically to service its Ohio and Michigan stores as it expands, the facility is on track to be functional by 2026. According to Sheetz officials, the new facility will create more than 700 jobs over the next five years.

The Findlay site marks the company’s third distribution center in the U.S., with the other two located in Claysburg, Pa., and Burlington, N.C.

“We are excited about the new jobs this facility will bring to Findlay and Hancock County,” Sheetz President and CEO Travis Sheetz said at the time of the groundbreaking. “The support from local, county and state leaders has been instrumental in making this project a reality. As we continue expanding across Ohio and Michigan, Findlay will be a key driver of our growth and future success.”

The Michigan move marked the chain’s first expansion to a new state in nearly two decades. Today, Sheetz operates locations in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and Michigan.
