The head of U.S. operations for Royal Dutch Shell, John Hofmeister, will retire in June.

Hofmeister led Shell Oil’s human resources department for the Dutch oil company before getting promoted three years ago. The Houston-based oil company said Marvin Odum, currently executive vice president of the Americas for Shell Exploration and Production, will replace him. Odum will keep his current title, along with his new duties at Shell Oil Co.

A spokesman for the company said Hofmeister chose to step down. Shell doesn’t have a mandatory retirement age.

As president of the U.S. unit, Hofmeister took on the role of spokesman for the company and for the industry. He spent time with the media and gave speeches across the country, stumping for U.S. energy policies that don’t restrict oil companies from doing their work.
