Gallagher spent 70 years in the industry, helping to launch Smoker Friendly among other achievements.

Terrence “Terry” Gallagher, who helped found Smoker Friendly and create the Cigarette Store Corp., has sadly passed away on Oct. 28 in Boulder, Colo.

Gallagher began his career at Oriental Refining in 1956 before becoming president of Asamera Oil U.S. Here he stayed until he purchased Gasamat, the retail arm of the company, in 1984. This move launched Gallagher’s family business, now in its third generation, with eight family members involved in the management, according to his obituary.

The company evolved from Gasamat and 95 retail fuel locations to a business with 350 stores in 13 states. The company encompasses real estate as well as fuel, tobacco and liquor stores. Smoker Friendly was founded in 1989.

As part of his passion for his career, Gallagher served on many boards and was involved with trade organizations, including the National Association of Convenience Stores and National Association of Tobacco Outlets. He was also a member of California Independent Oil Marketers, the Pacific Oil Conference and the Premium Cigar Association.

Gallagher was president of the American Petroleum Refiners Association, where he served on the board; Colorado and Wyoming Petroleum Marketers Association (CWPMA), where he served on the board; and the Denver Oilman’s Club. He also served on the boards of the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America, Colorado National Bank and Smoker Friendly International.

In 2006, Gallagher was honored for 50 years in the industry, and he continued to work for 20 more years. He was also the Denver Oilman’s Club “Oilman of the Year” in 1989 and in 1993, received CWPMA’s “Distinguished Service Award.”
