Stores raise $2.28 million, an increase of more than 15% from last year.

Valero Corner Stores raised a record $2.28 million in its 2011 Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) fundraising campaign.

The amount represents an increase of more than 15% from last year’s campaign, and is the first time in the Valero campaign’s 25-year history that the $2 million level has been surpassed.

Valero Corner Stores raise the funds each year through the sales of “Shamrocks” to customers. Over the 25 years that the stores have been conducting the fundraiser, they have raised well over $18 million for MDA. This year’s proceeds, which were raised over a period of just 35 days, will be presented to the MDA during its annual Labor Day telethon in Las Vegas.

“To raise this money for such a worthy cause, and in such a short time, is a testament both to our dedicated employees and to our caring and loyal customers,” said Gary Arthur, president of Valero Retail. “Our employees and customers truly care about the MDA mission and making a difference in people’s lives. We couldn’t accomplish this without the winning relationship our employees have with our customers. In the end, the true winners are those who will benefit from the research and treatment these dollars will afford.”

Valero operates approximately 5,800 retail and branded wholesale outlets in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean under the Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar and Beacon brands.
