Walgreens experiences slightly fewer sales in July 2012 compared with July 2011.

Walgreens announced a 3.7% decrease in July sales from the same month in fiscal 2011.

The company reported sales of $5.59 billion in July 2012 compared with the $5.81 billion from July 2011. Compared with prior months during this calendar year, July sales were more significantly impacted by an increase in generic drug introductions.

Total front-end sales decreased 0.8% compared with the same month in 2011, while comparable store front-end sales decreased 2.4%. The company also reported in-store traffic decreases, but an increase in basket size.

For fiscal 2012, year-to-date sales for the past 11 months were $65.79 billion, down 0.4% from $66.06 billion in fiscal 2011. 

Walgreens opened 16 stores during July 2012, including three relocations, and closed one store. The company operates 8,371 stores currently in all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam.
