With gas prices rising and holidays approaching, Walmart gives customers a break on fuel costs.

Walmart has announced a Great Gas Rollback promotion for customers for the end of 2012.

Customers using a Walmart gift card will receive a 10-cent-per-gallon discount, while those using a Walmart MoneyCard or Walmart credit card will save 15 cents per gallon. Gas will be available at more than 1,000 Murphy USA and Walmart stations, MSN Money reported.

Walmart’s Great Gas Rollback, which also ran last year, is set to begin Aug. 31 and end Dec. 24, just in time for Labor Day weekend.

Walmart has worried investors for months with news its customers are showing signs of financial stress, MSN Money reported.

“Our customers are sending their kids back to school and planning for Labor Day travels, and the holidays are just around the corner. As gas prices get higher, these tasks get tougher,” Duncan Mac Naughton, the chief merchandising and marketing officer for Walmart told MSN Money.

Walmart’s U.S. sales have struggled as it lost focus on its core mission of selling goods at the lowest prices, and got rid of popular merchandise as it looked to declutter its shelves. Now the retail giant has reversed course. During the last quarter, sales at stores that have been open at least a year rose 2.2% excluding fuel in its U.S. division, its fourth consecutive gain, but not quite reaching the 2.6% first-quarter increase.
