Wawa convenience store chain was recognized during a Sept. 26 ceremony at The Palm Restaurant in Atlantic City, N.J., for raising more than $700,000 to benefit a nonprofit organization for cancer patients and their families.
The ceremony was a fundraiser of sorts for Gilda’s Club South Jersey, a nonprofit organization that offers free emotional and social support for people living with cancer, as well as the families and friends of cancer patients.
The Palm Restaurant hosted the event, called the 4th Annual “Movers, Shakers, Difference Makers” luncheon.
Gilda’s Club South Jersey honored the Wawa Charity Committee for its contributions.
Wawa New Jersey Charities Committee designated Gilda’s Club South Jersey as a recipient of all the change collected during several months of each year. To date, Wawa has managed to raise more than $700,000 for the cause.
Wawa President and CEO Howard Stoeckel also attended the luncheon.
“I am accepting this award on behalf of our dedicated associates who have made a huge financial impact to many charities in our region, through their Community Giving Program, the Wawa Charities Fund, and in-store fundraisers,” Stoeckel said. “Wawa has a tradition of supporting causes our associates are most concerned with, and in our corporate, regional and local efforts, it is our more than 16,000 associates who keep our commitment growing strong in every one of our charitable endeavors.”
The event served primarily as an auction/raffle fundraiser for Gilda’s Club South Jersey. The Palm Restaurants have helped raise more than $2 million dollars for cancer charities across the nation, hosting numerous events with local charities.
Headquartered in Wawa, Pa., the Wawa chain has nearly 600 stores in more than five states, including New Jersey.
