The retailer is building momentum following its 2025 Family Dollar divestment.

As Dollar Tree continues to transform its footprint and shift its operational strategy, the chain recently reported that for its second quarter ending Aug. 1, it notched 7% total sales growth to $4.9 billion while opening 75 new locations.

Additionally, the chain converted or added about 710 stores to the Dollar Tree multi-price format, ending the quarter with approximately 6,600 multi-price stores.

Notably, the retailer generated $922 million of net cash provided by operating activities and $675 million of free cash flow.

Operating income was $690 million and operating income margin was 14.1%.

“What continues to set Dollar Tree apart is our ability to deliver value, convenience and the excitement of discovery all in one shopping trip,” said Mike Creedon, CEO of Dollar Tree. “Positive traffic trends helped drive strong comparable sales growth and EPS exceeded the high end of our outlook. Our strategies are unlocking a better assortment in better-run stores, while allowing us to engage customers in more relevant and compelling ways. While we are proud of the progress we have made, we are even more focused on the opportunities ahead as we continue investing in the customer experience, strengthening the business and driving profitable long-term growth.”

Dollar Tree ended the quarter with 9,436 stores across the Dollar Tree U.S. and Dollar Tree Canada banners.

Family Dollar Divestment

The positive quarter comes at a pivotal time for Dollar Tree following its March 2025 decision to divest its popular Family Dollar brand to Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management for around $1 billion.

Dollar Tree acquired the brand in 2015 for $8.5 billion.

After a review of potential alternatives for the Family Dollar business segment last year, the Dollar Tree leadership team and board of directors determined that a sale of Family Dollar to Brigade and Macellum “best unlocks value for Dollar Tree shareholders and positions Family Dollar for future success.”

“This is a major milestone in our multi-year transformation journey to help us fully achieve our potential,” said Creedon at the time. “We will continue to grow and optimize our Dollar Tree business to maximize value for Dollar Tree associates, customers and shareholders with an enhanced focus on compelling initiatives, including our expanded assortment, significant planned new store openings across the United States, and transactions that advance our growth strategy.”

Creedon continued, “Under the experienced, dynamic leadership of Family Dollar President Jason Nordin, and with the financial support of Brigade and Macellum, Family Dollar will be well-positioned for growth as a private company. With the support of a dedicated team, Family Dollar will be able to strengthen its commitment to providing affordable and essential goods to customers so they can do more with less.”
