The University of Louisville head coach and his assistant coach are new franchisees of Dunkin’ Donuts with former NBA forward Jamal Mashburn, businessman Tom Wylie and Pitino’s financial advisor, Rick Avare.
Their Lexington, Ky.-based Fast Break Donuts LLC plans to open 17 Dunkin’ stores in central Kentucky during the next several years, including freestanding units, and locations in convenience stores. The first store is scheduled for a late-April opening in a new residential and retail development in Lexington, where McCarty and Mashburn played college hoops for the University of Kentucky under Pitino, according to the Boston Herald.
Dunkin’ currently has 31 locations in Kentucky, and its launch into the central portion of the state is part of a national expansion strategy.
Pitino, McCarty and Mashburn aren’t the only Dunkin’ franchise owners with ties to professional sports. Former Pro Bowler Keith Sims owns a string of Dunkin’ locations in Florida’s Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Sims was an offensive lineman for 11 seasons for the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins before his retirement in 2000.
