Wawa Inc. plans to open its first drive-in food service this week at a store on George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown, Va., the Virginian-Pilot reported.
Customers will be able to pull into any of 20 parking spots and order food and drinks through a speaker system at the store, and Wawa servers will bring the orders to cars, the newspaper reported.
A second Wawa drive-in is scheduled to open May 30 in Virginia Beach, where it will include a patio area with picnic tables. The Pennsylvania-based Wawa has more than 560 stores in the U.S.
The company said it decided to launch the new concept in Virginia, where customers know the retailer more as a gas and convenience store, to highlight its food offerings.
