The Cigar Association of America (CAA) announced that its lobbying efforts to prevent a tax increase on cigars and pipe tobacco paid off in Maine.
Following an all-night negotiation session Tuesday, the Joint House and Senate Appropriations Committee adopted a state supplemental budget on Wednesday morning, and the amendment to increase taxes on cigars and pipe tobacco was unanimously defeated.
The legislative session is due to adjourn on April 16. The CAA noted that with the Maine tobacco tax threat now behind them they don’t anticipate other threats on tobacco taxes for Maine in 2014.
