Western Refining raised $600,000 to help send kids with Muscular Dystrophy to MDA Summer Camp.
Western Refining has announced that more than 260 company stores raised $600,000 during the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Summer Camp pinup program to help kids fighting muscular dystrophy and related life-threatening diseases experience a week of fun and friendship at MDA Summer Camp. The MDA Summer Camp is provided at no cost to the families of attendees.
Western Refining’s locations throughout the Southwest, operate under the Giant and Howdy’s brands.
“Another outstanding year for our employees and customers. To raise $600,000 in a short period of time demonstrates the commitment our employees put forward for this excellent cause,” said R.C. Sprouse, Western Refining vice president-retail. “Through their efforts, and the awesome generosity of our customers, we are, again, able to help send some amazing kids with muscle-debilitating diseases to the ‘best week of the year’ at MDA Summer Camp.”
From May 2 to June 13, Western Refining locations participated in the nationwide campaign in which customers and associates bought and sold paper pinups for $1, $5 or more to help send local kids to MDA Summer Camps throughout the Southwest.
Funds raised during the Summer Camp pinup program in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and west Texas help support MDA’s efforts to make each camp fully-accessible and medically-safe for its campers. They also help provide meals and snacks for each child, 24-hour medical staff on site, lodging for the full week and offer customized activities, such as swimming, horseback riding, zip-lining, adaptive sports and more, so every child can fully participate and truly live unlimited.
“The MDA Summer Camp pinup program is a simple and effective way for Western Refining employees and customers to make a real difference in the lives of individuals living with neuromuscular diseases throughout the Southwest,” said MDA divisional director Dave Bartels. “We’re grateful to everyone who opened their hearts and made a donation to help local kids experience MDA Summer Camp where they will have a chance to discover new interests and gain independence in an environment where barriers don’t exist.”
Since first teaming up with MDA in 2012, Western Refining and its customers have raised more than $2 million in support of MDA’s shared mission to find treatments and cures for people whose abilities to move have been compromised by neuromuscular disease – including everyday abilities like walking, running, hugging, talking and even breathing.
